Condition: Tire tracks are highly visible in the finished surface.

Figure 69 – Damage from Early Traffic
Possible Cause: Occasionally, a vehicle will drive across the slurry surfacing before it has gained adequate strength, leaving behind distinct tire tracks. The traffic control plan may not have adequate flaggers and devices necessary to prevent vehicle entry into the work zone.
Prevention: Thoroughly review the traffic control plan to ensure no unauthorized vehicles can enter the work zone. Broadcast slurry surfacing aggregate on fresh material near active driveways or intersections to help eliminate any bonding of the slurry surfacing to vehicle tires.

Inspector’s Note: The magnitude of the damage on the project shall be assessed by the agency and the contractor to determine which areas will need to be repaired. The high ridges from tire treads may require heating and raking prior to repairing with a full width pass. These repairs will leave transverse joints which will eventually blend into the new slurry surfacing.
