Poorly Constructed Edge Lines

image_print

Condition:  The slurry surfacing edge lines do not appear uniform or are not properly aligned with the shoulders or curb lines.

Figure 67 – Unacceptable Edge Line

Possible Causes:

  • The crew had difficulty following the edge line or curb line.
  • The mixture contains an excessive amount of liquid (has unacceptable consistency).

Prevention:

The specification should require compliance with the following measures:

  • Operate the spreader box and align the application equipment so that the edge does not vary more than ± 75 mm (3 inches) on a 30 meter (100 foot) straight section or 30 meter (100 foot) arc in a curved section.
  • Maintain accurate equipment calibration, adhere to the JMF and maintain the proper mix consistency necessary to produce straight edge lines.
