Damage from Premature Opening to Traffic

image_print

Condition:  Due to early release to traffic, damage has occurred on the slurry surfacing material such as:

  • Loss of aggregate (raveling)
  • Flushing in the wheel paths
  • Loss of skid-resistance or surface texture

Figure 68 – Flushing Due to Premature Release to Traffic

Possible Cause:  Early release to traffic

Prevention:  It is ultimately the contractor’s responsibility to work with the agency to assess the suitability of the application for release to traffic.  Release of traffic does not constitute acceptance of work. The contractor is ultimately responsible for damage that occurs from early release to traffic.

Inspector’s Note:  Refer to Section VI.E.1, page 46, Ambient Conditions for Application, for more information.  The magnitude of the damage may require the contractor to repair the affected area with a full width pass.
